The custom of placing a monument over the grave of a loved one is an ancient Jewish tradition. From Biblical times onward, wherever Jewish communities have existed, Jews have continued this practice of erecting a memorial in honor of their deceased. This custom generally takes place about one year after the burial but can be done as early as three months and as late as is needed for the family.
